I do not understand the objection to sensible gun laws. There are valid reasons for protectionist laws and regulations related to various licenses, permits, etc. If a commercial driver’s license is required to operate certain vehicles, why not a specific license to own and operate assault weapons?
Ideally, assault weapons should be only in the hands of trained law enforcement and military. The least we could do is require a special license, training, and certificate-of-need for an ordinary citizen to own an assault weapon. Maybe one simple question: “What or whom do you intend to assault?”
